Sigur Ros is now a trio, and as is the case with all bands losing a musician or artist, it forces a simplification of the sound. I think it’s very interesting to hear this happen with Sigur Ros, who have always been known for their intricate and detailed records and live performances. Hardy the “Power Trio” kind of band. But now here they are, coming out with their 7th studio album, “Kveikur”, and it has them delving into a more mainstream rock sound. There are still the classic soft voices and introspective musical elements, but with more song structure and familiar sounds, I think this is one of the better Sigur Ros releases in a long while.
This tune “Rafstraumur”, translated to “Electric Current”, is the best example of their new sound on this album. Bass chords hang on to the expansive guitars and embellishments with a smooth rumble… and the drum beat is equally as big… packing more of a punch than we’re used to from the Icelandic band. It’s nice to see them bring their sound to the next level.
